TRASHBLITZ CARIBBEAN

5 GYRES IS PARTNERING WITH CARIBBEAN-BASED ORGANIZATIONS TO BRING TRASHBLITZ, OUR COMMUNITY SCIENCE APP FOR COLLECTING DATA AND DRIVING SOLUTIONS TO PLASTIC POLLUTION, INTO THREE NEW CARIBBEAN NATIONS.

ABOUT TRASHBLITZ CARIBBEAN

Three organizations have been selected as TrashBlitz Caribbean partners. Each will receive $25,000 USD over two years to lead community-based plastic pollution audits, pilot local waste-reduction solutions, and contribute to a regional comparative report.

The selected organizations will use the TrashBlitz app to conduct community waste audits to inform locally driven action. In the second year, organizations will develop a pilot solution informed by their findings, spanning from refill systems to reuse infrastructure to policy campaigns. In Belize, this data-driven approach helped Sea of Life, a TrashBlitz partner, identify single-use water pouches as a key source of pollution at a local pilot school, leading to an 85% reduction in water-pouch pollution on campus.

Bahamas Environmental Recycling Initiative (BERI) is a nonprofit based on Grand Bahama Island, working to reduce waste and develop practical recycling and resource-recovery solutions for the Bahamas. Through community cleanups, environmental education, creative reuse, and initiatives such as “From Waste, We Create!” and the Bahama Bucket Project, BERI works with schools, businesses, volunteers, and community partners to recover materials from the waste stream, rethink what we consider waste, and build a more circular future for our islands.

The Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College (CFBC) is the national tertiary institution of the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis, providing academic, technical, and vocational education while advancing research, innovation, and community development in support of the country’s sustainable development.

Impact Blue Foundation has driven plastic-pollution prevention, circular-waste transformation, and environmental monitoring across Aruba and the Caribbean since 2013. Its strength is turning evidence into policy, enforcement, business practice, and measurable reductions at the source.

Sea of Life was founded to advance community-centered conservation in the Caribbean. Its approach is simple and collaborative: working hand in hand with local communities to help protect the sea and keep waterways, wildlife, and people healthy. By centering local knowledge and leadership, Sea of Life develops practical, locally relevant solutions to the challenges threatening our coasts and marine ecosystems. Its flagship initiative, “More Pride, Less Plastic,” is built on three interconnected pillars.
