Trawlshare Resources

Welcome! Follow the steps before receiving your trawl and beginning your research. Please note that it is essential that you communicate your data in a timely manner in order to participate in the TrawlShare program. Failure to do so may result in your having to return the trawl prematurely, at your expense.

1. Watch this video.

2. Download the protocol for your trawl.

2a. Download additional citizen science protocols (optional).

3. Download the specs for your trawl.

The Manta Trawl weighs 18 pounds and is 1.5 meters wide; it is made of aluminum with a 3 meters long, fine-mesh net. The mouth of the trawl is 60 centimeters wide, with two 45 centimeter floating wings on either side. It can be towed alongside a boat or stationed in a river to capture floating plastic on the water's surface while filtering debris through a fine-mesh net.

The High Speed Mini Trawl is smaller and lighter than the Manta; at 15 pounds it is designed to skim the water's surface at higher speeds, up to 8 knots. It has a 14 centimeter wide opening with two 50 centimeter wide wings, and can be towed alongside a boat or stationed in a river to capture floating plastic on the water's surface while filtering debris through a fine-mesh net.

4. Download the datasheet.

When you have completed your data, please email this sheet to carolynn@5gyres.org. It is essential that you communicate your research with Carolynn in order to participate in the TrawlShare program. Failure to share data in a timely manner may result in your having to return the trawl prematurely, at your expense.
