In February, we co-hosted our fourth annual My Plastic Valentine event in San Francisco. In March, we presented the Breaking Down Plastic conference at the South Carolina Aquarium and Voices 4 Oceans in Los Angeles (see below). And in June, we celebrated World Oceans Day with Blue Drinks at our Culver City WeWork HQ.
Annually, we host our Voices 4 Oceans storytelling event, which debuted in March 2017 at the Moss Theater, located at the New Roads School at the Herb Alpert Educational Village in Santa Monica, CA. Speakers included Danni Washington (“After Earth”), Eric Balfour (“Haven”), youth activist Erin Schrode, Graham Hamilton (“Code Black”), comedian Jake Johannsen, environmentalist Lindsay Dahl, Shiva Rose (“Return to Babylon”), Steve Connell (“We Are the Lions”), and designer/entrepreneur Steve Glenn, accompanied by music from Joel Harper. The event was generously sponsored by Costa, Klean Kanteen, Nordic Naturals and Outerknown; a generous donation from Ron and Kelly Meyer brought a group of students from Environmental Charter High School and Santa Monica High School. The event was amplified by media partner Plastic Pollution Coalition.
In addition to the live program, we hosted a reception with food and libations provided by Karl Strauss Brewing Company, Omnibus Delecto Catering, Reed's Ginger Beer and Theo Chocolate, where a Gold Frame photo booth enabled social sharing.
Thanks to photographer Erik Voake and videographer Chris Jones!

We are so grateful for the opportunity to host Voices 4 Oceans at the beautiful Moss Theater, located at the New Roads School at the Herb Alpert Educational Village. New Roads School is a diverse and cohesive educational community, reflective of the kaleidoscope of cultures, ethnicities, beliefs, and orientations that make the larger Los Angeles community so vibrant. New Roads believes that a meaningful 21st century education must include a diverse cohort as well as integration with the larger community in order to prepare students for conscientious participatory lives and not merely to ready them for college.
All proceeds from the event supported our #foamfree Action Campaign, as well as 5 Gyres' mission to end the global health crisis of plastic pollution.
