In August 2016, 5 Gyres embarked on its 17th expedition, traveling 1,687 miles through the Canadian Arctic to collect large and small microplastics in an effort to better understand the global distribution of plastic smog that plagues our seas. In partnership with One Ocean Expeditions and ExploringCircle, 5 Gyres’ Director of Research Dr. Marcus Eriksen and Environmental Programs Director Carolynn Box led a group of 22 citizen scientists from three countries who assisted in gathering data crucial to our forthcoming Global Estimate of Plastic Pollution.
